Yes. I brought a big heavy cooler bag with home made burritos, fruit, chocolate, go-go squeeze, salad, cookies, crackers, and 6 bottles of water. The security at front checked in the bag and didn't say anything. There are lockers at the front of the park for rent, but I just lugged the bag around in a wagon. I used the stroller parking to stash the wagon when we went in an attraction.
Yes... you can bring a soft sided cooler bag .. plastic water bottles and Gatorade are allowed. I brought 32 oz insulated water bottle and it was allowed.. Small snacks allowed. Homemade burritos or sandwiches allowed. Freeze a couple water bottles to keep your stuff cool ; )

Post Covid response: there are no refill water fountains. You can ask at the vendors and you will be charged for the water. Water bottles must be sealed off you bring them into the park. You can bring food and snacks but lockers are only 2 hours. Do you really want to lug around good all day? Families bring wagons with food and family. I suppose this could save money. Others bring in subway sandwiches. You cannot bring kitchen, although many have.

LA has one of the best drinking water in the country. There are numerous water spots to refill a water bottle.
The only time you can't bring food and drinks is during Halloween Horror Nights but if you're there during regular park hours you can still bring food and drinks or if you're not going into the park (just getting a picture at the globe) you can bring food and drinks. HHN rules usually begin right at 4:00 PM but that might change from year to year. There are other restrictions that apply during HHN and during regular hours but they change constantly so it's best to go to the Universal Studios website and get the most up to date information. If you're going for HHN make sure you're looking at the HHN page for prohibited items and not the regular USH page which is going to have a different list. Also, if you're going for HHN... bring good running shoes and an extra pair of clean underwear.

Yes, a backpack of snacks and up to 2 L water should be fine according to website. A wheeled cooler would not be allowed.

I brought in 2 of the bigger hydroflasks and no one had a problem with them. I just had ice packed in them and asked the consessions to fill with water. There are self serve soda machines though out the park that i used to get ice when i ran low, but those machines are not tall enough for them so had to use my hand to scoop it into the flask.
