There are "walk up" sites so if you are going mid week or off peak you should be fine without a reservation. But of course going all the way to Borrego Palm Canyon to find out that you don't have a spot can be annoying. If you are willing to Camp primitive that you can actually camp anywhere within Anza-Borrego State Park
Reservations are not required, but definitely recommended (especially during peak season).
