Must haves: two flashlights; a jacket; a way to get there. An explanation for the last point: there is a tiny parking lot, and I had to walk 1 1/2 miles from the much larger lot at the visitor center.
It is not a good place to go spelunking. It was interesting to visit and see, but it wasn't an "exploration". The Oregon Caves are way better. You have a guide, but it is absolutely beautiful and there are all kinds of stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations. The Lava Cave is just a lava tube, like a subway tunnel for lava.
Might want a jacket as well. Its gets kinda cold down there.
Yep! But not if you plan on something serious. Other than a light, don't plan on needing any other equipment.
