It is rumored to be haunted by ghosts, some say of those the rifles killed, others speculate they are the workers. Houdini once stayed there (October 1924) trying to disprove the theory of ghosts. After his night in the house he said he could neither confirm nor deny the existence of spirits and that the house was indeed a mystery. Some tour guides believe this is where it got it's name. Many of the architectural aspects along with Sarah Winchester's belief that the ghosts would stay at bay as long as she continued to build could also lead to it's name.
