I find it less expensive and less hassle to take light rail. Keep your head on a swivel and you will be fine. You are more at risk being a victim of a dui than a violent homeless person. Lol
There is a parking garage across thr street but it a flat rate parking fee for all day. Usually it is $10 unless there is a special event in Old Sacramento. You could try to park at ine if the street meters. Buy that is hit or miss given the popularity of Old Sacramento.
Stick close to the station or to busy streets there is a homeless camp not far from the train and bus depot and I am not sure if the crime is a problem in the area or not.
Be prepared to pay 13-14 $15
I agree ....the parking garage across the street.
There's a parking garage right across the street.
There is some street parking and also a couple of parking lots within a five minute walk on Front Street if I remember rightly
There is street parking near museum. A parking deck near Tower Bridge with parking lots nearby. Plenty all around.
If it's weekdays, you can try the streets in old town, if busy or on the winds there is pay parking lot right across the street from the museum

Is there a model train layout in the museum? And do they have any wig wag railroad crossing signals?
