They prefer you to have a passport or passport card, especially if you cross often. If you are a US citizen and you forgot your ID or passport card then they will ask you questions and look you up before allowing you to cross... At least this happened to us a few times by car.
All you need is a US ID from any state. Ive don't it several times in the past month with just a California state ID
