I cross back to the US with just a drivers license. I've used an expired passport as well. I've crossed quite a few times though so they probably have my picture and documents in their database. They never give me any slack about just crossing with my drivers license.

Not all cabs from mexico side can cross into the USA. Drivers have to have at least a b1/b2 visa. And depends on the day and time, traffic can be up to 3 hours long to cross. You have to negotiate with the mexican drivers how much before you get in the cab. Best to walk across and get uber or lyft at the US side.

The only (big!) concern is being certain you are NOT in an expedited lane (like Sentri) if you haven't paid for the privilege to use it. However, "All Traffic" lanes are for anyone, even if just a driver's license. Crossing seems much easier with a new "REAL-ID" style credential.... They've gotten careful about fruits and veggies--even if you bought something in the USA, you won't necessarily be able to bring it BACK. Have fun, be safe, stay honest!

There are two lines, one is for Mexicans and the other for foreigners. They do not always ask you to prove that you are Mexican, that is very rarely and in the foreigners, your valid passport is enough.
