It's actually called International Orange & the color was selected by consulting architect Irving Morrow because it complements the natural surroundings and enhances the bridge's visibility in fog.
The other perspective is that it has got nothing to do with California gold rush. :)
It's sort of dark orange, but we seem to perceive it as red... specially in the distance.
