How does the upgrade process work If I am currently making payments on my device but want to upgrade it?

And one I'd save the trip costs to the nearest store and just call customer service to get answered because the store employees seem to lack knowledge on a lot of Verizon's policies. And yelling at faceless disembodied voices is easier than the meatworld versions. ✌🏻😚🍦
