I began paying into SSI when I was about 10; became disabled & receiving SSDI about 10 years ago. Will my monthly income change when I turn 65 & retire, or do I stay on disability? How does this transition work?

Yes, asking is best. What I have heard is, when you get Disability you are paid at your full retirement rate. When you get to your full retirement age (usually 66) they change you from the Disability program to regular retirement. There is no change in your check just which Social Security program you are paid from.
