Are we aloud to go to the gate with those who are leaving if they are family and friends or do we have to say our goodbyes at the check-in area? We haven't used the airport since the early 2000 and not sure what rules have been changed or added.

You can call ahead to get escort pass information, but you will probably be told that issuance of escort passes is determined locally by each airline.

You can ask a ticket counter agent for a gate pass. Usually it's only reserved for those with a specific need to accompany someone to the gate.
