An SUV isn't nessacary though having a bigger vehicle will allow better comfort for you and your passengers I drove the other side of the canyon and it seems that no matter the time of year unless there is still snow on the ground your likely to experience at least a warm if not hot day so be sure your ac is up to the task
The road is paved and well maintained. Not even potholes. It is a very long drive. I would suggest renting a hybrid or a good on gas car, we used a ford hybrid sedan and it worked great. Better on has and saved money.
Ive done the drive in a mustang convertible and in a Camry before, you dont need an SUV 😁
