There is no reason to be afraid of Grizzly and black bears. Or the mountain lions either. You should take precautions, like making noise while hiking, but you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Don't ever approach a bear. Don't talk to it. Don't run from it. And definitely don't turn your back to it. If a bear starts to approach you, stand your ground, and speak to it in a firm voice while making yourself look as large as you can (wave your arms slowly). If you are attacked by a grizzly, lay down on your stomach and spread your legs, don't let it roll you over. If you are attacked by a black bear, fight back with all you got. (The only recorded mountain lion attacks are joggers, they won't go after a person) Don't EVER run from a apex predator, they will chase you, and they will win; a grizzly can do like 40mph, you cant. Bears can both run downhill and climb trees For bears, remember this rhyme: If it's brown, lay down. If it's black, fight back. If it's white, you're fuc**d.
Talk to park ranger, that will tell you tips on safety. We did not see any bears.
Bears have been reported all around Ross Lake. They are usually afraid of humans, but you should be prepared and know what to do in case of an encounter.
