Try Val its easy to grow and works in sand.
I have sand in all my tanks and my plants do very well. I don't have a large variety of plants because I don't use specialty lights or CO2 at all. But the ones I do have grow like a maniac! I use Easy Green once a week now, and it's THE best thing you can do for your tank and fish. Jungle Val, Water Wisteria, some Dwarf Saggitaria, Java Fern, Water Lettuce, Frogbit and Duckweed are what I have, and they do grow beautifully!
Floating plants, water lettuce, frog bit, anubius golden tied to mopani wood use easy green and test water, keep nitrates around 15 to 20 ppm. And make shure you have a good light, a fenix stingray led light would be good for these plant's
Check out aquarium co~op on you tube, there's tons of info on planted tanks.
I just recently used EcoComplete in one of my tanks, and I now wish I had used sand like my other tank. I have had no problems growing plants in sand.
I have a planted 55 gallon with sand. I have an assortment of plants. Most plants should do fine, like Amazon swords. However, some like Java ferns, require stumps or drift wood to attach to.
Ive heard sand is very tough to plant in. I had sand and decided to switch to nutrient rich graven made for plants. But if you want to stay with sand it can still be possible. I would image you have to use eco green. Its rich in nutrients. You use one pump for every ten gallons every week. Make sure roots are planted all the way in sand and you have a good aquarium light. Fluval is the best light for photosynthesis. Best of luck!!
