A chip is the size of a grain of rice approx. injected (subcue) in the skin of the neck, sedation isn’t required. Petco operates Vetco at their stores & offer microchips for $15, call for their schedule.
Usually when they spay or neuter your dog at the vet you can ask them to chip them at the same time as it can be rather painful for your pet if they're awake
