There are mounds and earth walls all over the area. The term "fort" is loosely applied here. It is not a defense complex, more a community of hunter gathers and intellectuals.
It most definitely was a fort. There are some who'd like to re write history to say it wasn't, but being there in person, it's obvious it was a place of defense.
