Crescent City is the closest to the bulk of the best sights in the redwoods. It has numerous hotels. The town of Klamath comes second, and has one hotel.
We stayed in Arcata
On the north side with the Trees of Mystery is Crescent City or there is a hotel right there at Trees of Mystery. On the south side where Avenue of the Giants road is with lots of groves to checkout is the town of Redcrest and theres a few small towns near there with places to stay. In between the two is Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville and Trinidad. We stayed in the middle, since we were doing all of the redwood sites, at The Emerald Forrest cabins. Very nice little cabins and the grounds are beautiful but pricey. Be sure to visit Prairie Creek State Park and Patricks Point State Park. The James Irvine hiking trail from Prairie Creek to Fern Canyon is magical. Its a 4.6 mile hike one way. We had my mom drive and meet us at Fern Canyon so we didnt have to hike all the way back, and very glad we did as i was pooped since im out of shape. Fern Canyon is beautiful and a must see but its a long dirt road with some pretty bad spots and a shallow creek to cross, no low to ground cars.
