You can buy your tickets in the French Quarter, they have free bus ride to take you back and forth. We got our tickets right off the Mississippi River where the near the boat tours, chartered bus right next too it, take and drop you back off.
You also have the option of arranging through a tour operator which offers transportation. I rented a car for the day to visit.
If you buy the ticket on site, the walking tour begins right there otherwise you will need to find your own way to get there
If you stay at a hotel, they can call them and arrange for you to be picked up from the hotel.
