Stop at the base, just off highway, and pay $6 per vehicle if not residents. Then up 9% grade twisting road. I would advise against a huge motorhome drive up of possible. Going up wasn't the issue, it's going down riding the brakes. My 28' class A, at 16,000lbs, once arriving back down, I could smell the brakes.
It is a two lane, paved road from the highway to the Cave Visitor Center. The three mile road is winding and up to a 9% grade. Nonresidents visiting the Caverns can pay their nonresident vehicle entry fee when purchasing tickets at the Cave Visitor Center, so it's not necessary to stop at the Main Visitor Center if you plan on taking a cave tour.
It is paved. Don't let the 9% grade scare you. We just came down in our 29' class A motor home. As long as you gear down and take it slow you should have no problem. There's a few places where you can pull over and let smaller vehicles pass. There's even RV parking at the top.
The road up is paved. It is a typical mountain road, steep and winding. The cave entrance is at the top. At one point in the caverns you will be 365' under ground and you will still be a mile above sea level.
Yes we drove up there in my 1999 Mistubishi Diamante with a kit on & didn't bottom out or anything if that is what the concern is. But it is all circumstantial because it depends on the driver & how comfortable with the vehicle they are.
Yep it is; they advise leaving trailers at the bottom though. 9% grade, as others mentioned.
Yes. The drivable road to the caverns is paved. However, the walking trail is not.
