I have a world war 1 starboard ships lanter that is very rusted. I want to restore it but am worried about the amount of rust. Should i gently use a wire brush and then a rust inhibitor, or the other way around?

I would have it appraised as is first because it may be more valuable in its present state if you are going for the original antique.

I agree with the other comments. Also, decide your end goal first, whether you want to keep it, wire it, use it, or sell it. Maybe have an appraiser or restorer look at it second, as-is. Then you should have your answer. I have found that you can also find these things on "YouTube"; very valuable resource.

Sometimes you ruin the value when eliminate the natural patina. Have an expert look at it before you move forward.

It would be best to have it done by a professional. If it has a lot of rust you could damage it using a wire brush. Good luck!
