No cell service at this campground, and you have to pay $34/night no hookups. Better play is to either do the dispersed camping on the drive into South Mineral (many spots have service but all would get tons of dust from being right on the road) or to try one of the campgrounds you get to before south mineral as they are free and have service. Ice lake trail is amazing though. Camp hosts were friendly and seemed to be doing a good job. They probably will have firewood to sell.

An absolute treasure, the waterfalls tucked away here make you feel like you have discovered another world that is untouched. There is very little foot traffic and very simple trails to these amazing locations. UPDATE - I have since revisited after it reopened in September of 2021 (from the Ice Lake fire in 2020) and this area is nearly the same, with the exception of the falls to the north of the road now completely destroyed.

Great campground. Beautiful mountains surrounding. Most sites are spacious, and partially or fully shaded by mature pines. The entrance is also the trailhead for a very popular hike to Ice Lake Basin. Hundreds of people per day use this trail. Nonetheless, the campground is pretty quiet and peaceful.

Does South mineral camping area still have primitive free camping

We were there Labor Day 2017 and there are three areas that you can camp with RVs and other spots here and there down the road that are good for walk-in tent camping. No fees! The only fee area is at the very end of the road which is a National Forest campground.

is there anywhere close to get firewood?

The firewood from the camp host is generally provided for the "reserved/paid" campsite at the trailhead but for those who are not staying in one of the reserved spots - there is a wood cabin on your left as you are going from the camp site into Silverton who generally has plenty. If no one is around - they will leave a can there for you to leave cash and take the wood.
