I could've spent the whole day there.. What an incredible experience! There is so much more to this museum than I expected. Well worth the $8 entry fee

It was fantastic! Though some of Oregon's history is brutal and upsetting, this museum is very intriguing. I will definitely go back, especially since we were there 2 hours and only got through one level.

Great museum (I’m from LA and I’m still impressed!). Love the temporary exhibition on the suffragettes - wish it were permanent and if it included a footnote on the ERA that would be stellar. The permanent exhibition upstairs was amaaaazing and the gift shop is tiny but mighty! Very happy I stopped by - I came by twice between work breaks for ample time to really stroll and absorb the great exhibits. A great stop if you’re in town. Parking wasn’t too bad either. That was surprising.

Melanie Sullivan | Aug 17, 2019
Oregon Historical Society | Aug 17, 2019

Currently our admission is discounted to $5 due to the closure of our permanent exhibit - however, once our new permanent Oregon history exhibit, Experience Oregon, opens on February 14, admission will return to $11 for adults, $9 for seniors / students, $5 for youth 6-18. We are free for children 5 and under, members, and residents of Multnomah County.

How far are you in public transit travel time from TriMet's Black WES line in Wilsonville through MAX? I live in Salem and would like to come... AND GET BACK HOME TONIGHT. Wondering if that's possible.

Chanda Mija | Aug 17, 2019
Oregon Historical Society | Aug 17, 2019

Google Maps' Get Directions feature is probably the best way to figure that out. The biggest limitation may be that WES only runs during rush hours, so the next train to Beaverton today doesn't leave until 3:28pm. If you caught that train, you could transfer to MAX in Beaverton, get off in Downtown Portland, and then we're only a 6 minute walk. Total travel time would be 1 hour and 4 minutes, but unfortunately we close at 5 pm. Another option (depending on schedules) might be to take Amtrak from Salem. From Portland's Union Station, you can catch either the Green or Orange MAX lines and get off 3 blocks from us.

A friend in Portland has an strong interest in historical relics. She has unearthed items of all descriptions in abandon neighborhoods and she has an excellent series of photographs. Is there any interest is seeing her collection?

Are the artifacts relevant to the city of Troutdale? Do you have pictures? If yes contact THS in Troutdale.

How are donations checked out when first received? Name of room?

Astrid Ingrid | Aug 16, 2021
Oregon Historical Society | Aug 16, 2021

Hi Astrid! Thank you for your questions - can you be more specific in terms of donations (monetary vs. donations to our museum or research library)? Thank you!

Is it possible to put very old golf course, still open to public, in the Oregon historical society? If so, what are the advantages to do this?

Dennis Stafford the singing cowboy | Aug 17, 2019
Rachel Randles | Aug 17, 2019

Hi Dennis! This is not something that would be within our collecting scope - but perhaps you are hoping this would be considered a historic landmark? If so, depending on where it is located, you can contact the Historic Landmark Commission for that area.

What year is the mint mark on the penny used in the coin flip that determined the name for the city of Portland?

Tim Bignell | Aug 17, 2019
Oregon Historical Society | Aug 17, 2019

Hi Tim! It is an 1835 American copper penny - you can read the full history on our Oregon Encyclopedia! https://oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/portland_penny/#.W4_wnlVKiUk

How much time would you say people typically spend going through the museum?

Jill McIntosh | Aug 17, 2018
S K | Aug 17, 2018

In my opinion, it greatly varies. Between the Racing to Change and OSU exhibits, you could comfortably spend an hour in each. You could also peruse every exhibit in an hour. Finally, the flagship exhibit on Oregon's specific history is closed for rennovation until Feb '19. In sum, it really depends on how your group usually moves through any museum. Do you read every detail available, or do you focus on a few points before moving on.

Are cameras permitted in the museum?

Juelette Fadness | Aug 17, 2018
Emory Penney | Aug 17, 2018

I didn't see any postings forbidding cameras, I would avoid flash photography, it may not be explicitly forbidden now, but if too many people use flash photograph, the next thing you know no one will be allowed to photograph at all.
