Paved and plenty of spaces to camp but so noisy it's hard to rest before your climb! The hike itself is amazingly well maintained and worth every hour :)

Well, I parked my car here, climbed to the top of Mt. St. Helens, came back down, and my car was still there, safe and sound. I did not spot a Sasquatch on the hike. I know at least one school group that camps here regularly and does a climb to the top. There is also a geocache right here in the campsite area.

Road is a little rough getting there, but was doable in a minivan, just have to be careful. There are a bunch of small primitive camping areas. It does fill up some nights, and the bugs were pretty bad when I was there July 28th.

This was a hell of a hike. Really hard but worth it. We got permits at 6am back in March I think (6 months before the hike). We stayed at the Lone Fir Resort, 30 mins before the trailhead, instead of camping at the Bivouac like a lot of people do. The trail doesn't have great facilities so prepare accordingly. It was really nice doing this hike in September because the visibility and temperatures were great.

We got there a bit late like 9pm and there were plenty of campsites.
3700 ft!
Got in a little after nine a few Mondays ago. Plenty of space.
You don't need a permit to camp, but you do need one to climb. In all likelyhood they are sold out. If any are available they will be through recreation.gov. https://www.recreation.gov/permits/4675309
If you stick to the Ptarmigan Ridge trail it should be ok. There are posted signs stating where a climbing permit is required. Beyond Ptarmigan Ridge (2 miles each way) you need a permit to summit Mt St Helen's. With little hiking experience the Monitor Ridge trail to the summit would be arduous at best.
We did it in an explorer a couple weeks ago with no issues.
4.5 miles each way. I climbed in September on a clear day after several feet of snow earlier that week. I'm physically fit but a novice hiker and it took me 11 hours.
