Nielsen's opened in 1965 on 3rd Avenue in downtown Seattle. I attended K-4 at Seward Elementary School (now TOPS), and after my parents bought a home in the Mount Baker neighborhood, my siblings and I took the city bus to/from school. With a transfer right out front of Nielsen's! When we had saved up our allowance, we could purchase a "potato" and eat it on the No. 10 (later 14) bus ride home. Pastries are still awesome today!

I got to try these AMAZING pastries twice over my weekend in Seattle, and I can't wait to go back! Everything I tried- both the sweet and savory pastries, we're delicious! The owners and staff I encountered were so sweet and kind. I highly recommend stopping here at any chance you get!

Yummy yummy. The last time I had pastries like this was when I was studying in Copenhagen back in the 80’s. I tried different ones. The “potato” was fantastic.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I downloaded a no waste food app called Too Good To Go and picked up a surprise bag of random pastries this afternoon. 1) I love that they are participating in this, 2) It was so easy and a great value and 3) Everything was delicious. Their entire menu is a slice of heaven. Oh and I also picked up a Potato because it’s my weakness.

Is John Nielsen's Bakery the same Danish bakery that was located on 3rd & Union or Pike St. downtown Seattle decades ago that sold the delicious Napoleon Hats?

Yes! Long ago, they moved when the transit tunnel was being constructed.

Hello! Angela is correct (thanks Angela!) in we only allow 4 people in the shop at a time, masks are required as is social distancing. All the windows and doors are open in the shop, so there is a solid amount of airflow. Our baristas will add cream and sugar to your coffee (no self service of any kind). Our staff also do temperature/health checks every morning before their start of shift and we offer generous sick leave to our employees so that they are free to take time off if they need to. Thanks!
