Great experience to see the reformatory, learning about their system and also where shawshank was mainly shot. We took the self guided tour, but would recommend a guided one if you do not have much time(but slightly more expensive)

Beautiful building, interesting interior. We went for the Haunted House on Oct 30, 2022. It is one of the better Haunted Houses I’ve been to! Great props & some really good costumes. The tall woman in the promo-videos was at the beginning of the tour - she was amazing!! I wish they had a few of her and you saw her throughout the walk a couple of times, that would have been spooky cool! They also could have had more characters in cells on the upper floors to add to the scare factor, but perhaps staffing is tight? The wait (in the rain) was only about a half hour, we arrived for our 7:30 scheduled time 10 minutes early as they recommended and the line was already SO LONG! We were at the end, way past all the food booths, so I recommend arriving even earlier. Our daughter had her knife on her (gift from her brother) and at the security check they offered to throw it away!! She said no way! So they gave her a card and had her run back to the car to drop it. She made it back in time. :) You can upgrade to a touch pass, which means some of the characters grab you by the hair, and push you into a cell, or hold you in front of the Zombie attack, I do recommend that if you’re comfortable. Added some fun. Overall my daughter & her boyfriend, sister, and husband had a great time. It’s So great how long the walk is!! You really feel like you got your $’s worth. Might go back for the day tour tomorrow to see it all in the light, amazing facility & the Haunt is so well done. My all-time favorite haunt is Universal Halloween Horror Nights!

Yes you can. We bring all of our equipment as well.
Self guided tours are $25 a person, children 6 and under are free. Guided tours are $35 a person.
You can bring a camera and or cellphone and take pics throughout. The only places you cannot photograph are specific windows, and those are clearly marked.
Yes we do tours as for the haunting no none have seen or heard anything unfortunately
There is limited handicap accessibility. You would get to see the Ohio State Corrections museum, the wardens dinning room, and the museum store. Then there's access to both cell blocks, solitary confinement, the bull pin, both shower rooms, and the central guard room. But it is not heated in the winter, so prepare for very cold weather or wait til about May when it finally warms up a bit.
The different tours are different prices. Reasonably priced though Start at $10 I believe
We stayed overnight Dec 1st. Cold but dress warm
Only open now til Nov 23 for Escape from blood tours then on the 24th, day tours resume
h
Yes, just not out the back windows towards the current prison. They're pretty good at reminding you (signs).
About an hour and a half, according to staff.
I would say that you absolutely have enough time.
Keep an eye on Groupon. Regular price self guided tickets were on sale this week. 2 for $26. We added $5 for the audio wand
For day tours, you can simply show up and purchase tickets
Overall you see about 90% of the facility, there are areas that are chained off, and you will not be allowed to access the outside (back) part of the prison, because the active prison is back there. Also, you cannot photograph or video the active one...signs are clearly posted in places that overlook it. I *think it's actually illegal, but it will at the least get you removed from the premises if you're caught.
There is some areas that are closed off but the self-guided tour is pretty extensive also no large backpacks I had a small sling bag with my cameras and that was okay was a fun self-guided tour take your time and enjoy I also got one of the one of the wands the narration made the tour more immersive but you can do fine if you do not want one
During the fall season, it takes about 1-2 hours to walk through. During the regular season, about 2 hours or so.
Yes they did, Season 2, episode 11. Google the keywords "ghost adventures ohio state reformatory " and you should be able to find the video.
Yes it's a haunted house type experience. It's awesome!!
It's okay to bring your cell phone in and do some recording
The Ohio Historical Society in Columbus has all of their records. You can even get a copy of the person's mugshot.
There are all night haunted excursions. Better to go in warm weather.
Yes it is haunted. I felt touching and breathing. If you do the night ghost hunt i recommend not bringing children. I hope that answers your question!
Call them. Well worth it though.
12.00 per person for the history tour. Not sure of the behind the Hollywood tour. But at the end you are able to explore on your own. So get there earlier and plan longer then the 90min tour. Great place to visit!
They are done for the season.
The price varies if you can get a good deal which are fairly common
open tours or guided tours?
Sept 4 to Nov. 23, 2017 Escape from blood prison tour
The tour was about an hour. But the unguided hunt was from 8pm til 3am. They do daytime guided tours too
