Neat park with trails, camping & cabins on a lake.

Magical place and Danny represents the best of what the state park service has to offer as a friendly vastly knowledgeable ranger who cares for people and our amazing country's natural resources. We'll be back!

Nice park and hiking trail - we're here in late October and the foliage is spectacular!

Beware! When I called to make reservations a few months ago, I inquired about the accessibility to the cabins, I explained to them that my husband was a 100% disabled retired Veteran with back and leg problems, I was assured that there would be “ no problem”. Well, we were not told that the road to the cabins were so very narrow, if you met another vehicle, somebody was gonna have to “back up” , the road was totally gravel on the side of a mountain as was our assigned cabin! There was no steps only a gravel path covered with leaves and roots with a terrible unsafe incline even for people without any physical problems, there was no way we could have carried out luggage and bed linens down that steep embankment. Also, I was told that the 2 bedrooms had 2 queen beds, well one had at best a full size and the other had 2 sets of bunk beds, so another expense as I had purchased mattress covers and sheets and comforters for queen beds, we have king, when I called a few days prior to our arrival I asked again about the accessibility and the bedrooms and was told the same as when I first made reservations. The incline trying to get out from the cabin was terrible, you need 4 wheel drive, thank God for the guy in the cabin beside of us for the “push” or we would still be there. Yes, they did reimburse us our money, but it ruined our trip, my husbands 52nd class reunion that we were unable to attend because we brought our dog, we could not find another place that would accommodate us because of a no pet policy or they were already booked for the weekend, so we had no other choice but to drive back to our home in Myrtle Beach SC! We, of course lost the $$ we paid for the reunion and the extreme wear and tear on our bodies!

Yes, we found some in May when we were there, but they were harder to find than expected. No tools needed, just patience and perseverance.
To clean a staurolite crystal, soak overnight in hot soapy water, or heat in water and baking soda for a few minutes. Remove the light colored schist with a pocketknife or small file. When clean, soak the crystal in mineral oil overnight to restore its luster. NEVER SOAK STAUROLITE CRYSTALS IN ACID! Some of them never look like a cross.
I answered this question last night but you have added some pieces to it. Yes the park has a snack bar by the beach. The parking is $5 per car. Swimming varies whether weekday or weekend and by age. Weekday - $2 3-12, $3 13 and over Weekend - $3 3-12, $4 13 and over under 3 is free The park is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. but guarded swimming and the snack bar are open 10 a.m-6 p.m., Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekend. Hours are impacted by weather and circumstances beyond our control. When the beach is not guarded, guests can swim at their own risk within the roped off area.
Yes but they may still be closed due to Covid.
They do have kayaks that they rent. I'm sure you can bring your own also
No max is 30 feet. The campground is on the top of a rise with drop offs and we don't have room to expand. We added an equestrian campground that can hold equipment up to 50 feet with electric and water hookups but we do not have showers there. If you are self-contained that could be ok for you. We do restrict non-equestrians to book only one month before arrival though. The nearest park would be Smith Mountain Lake State Park which can accommodate up to 50 feet.
Only pay if they swim, pay for parking, reserve tables
State law prohibits dogs on swimming beaches so they can't swim where you can swim since people can only swim at the swimming beach. But elsewhere in the park as long as you keep the dog on the leash, you can lead it to the shoreline and it can go in the water.
Yes. It is possible they will not have enough lifeguards but if that is the case swimming at your own risk will be available.
There are probably leeches in all fresh water lakes in Virginia BUT in a highly populated swimming area not likely. There have been no reports this year of any in the swimming area.
You can only have a maximum of two camping units on any site. You also have to put tents on the tent pad so that is more limiting. At Fairy Stone the tent pad size is 12' x 14.'
Yes they are easily accessible. The bikers have to look out for the horses and hikers
Fairystone is a very nice, CLEAN beach area with a shaded and unshaded grassy area as well as a LARGE sand area with a diving board dock and an in water playground for the kids as well as a lifeguard and a snack shack. (the other places in our area are swim at your own risk sand beaches...nothing more) The prices are: $5 parking fee Under 3 - swims free Ages 3-12 - $2 weekday $3 weekend Ages 13 & up- $3 weekday $4 weekend U can also purchase coupons good for 10 uses $23 and 20 uses for $44 There is also canoe and paddle boat rentals available I hope this helps!!
Go to the park office so you can see what they look like before they are polished, so you know what to look for.
Yellow and Red sites, up to 30' RVs, pop-ups, tents; have a sandy tent pad Green sites, no tents; up to 30' RVs or pop-ups only; do not have a sandy tent pad All sites listed above have electric and water hook-ups, no sewer. There are 12' by 14' sandy tent pads on yellow and red sites only (tents must fit on pads); no tents are permitted on green sites.
No. They were in disrepair and had to be removed. We had repaired multiple times but they were past their life expectancy.
Yes. It was permanently removed in the fall of 2019
They do have walking canes in the shop you can buy they look to be great quality I'm not sure on price though
Swim at your own risk, full.of goose poop!!
You can put in at the swimming area or across the lake at the boat ramp area.
Looks like I will be removing this place from my Google maps want to go list because while I completely agree with the whole no dogs in the posted "swimming" areas but dogs and their owners can not get wet together is absurd.. places must not agree that dogs overheat and dehydrate faster than we do... And it just dawned on me because my son and my dog cannot get wet at the same time that means I cannot get wet at all that is all around not fair and messed up...
There is a very nice beach area.
Yes, but worth it. Proceeds from licenses go towards purchasing and maintaining amazing public resources like Fairystone State Park
You can get extremely lucky..look down by the water....edge of the woods....anywhere there mightve been a disturbance or they have a very nice gift shop. Good luck !!!
We have limited wifi access at the park office. It is limited because our internet is not very good. That area of the state has been abandoned by cell and broadband providers.
Yes, Little Mountain Falls. It is very rain dependent. We had a gully washer last week so if you go soon it should be nice.
Yes there are still pedal board, canoes and row boats for rent. So much fun, we fished from one.
I just made reservation for 4 nights. $175. It said $35/night, but it was $40 then tax and fees
Yes, but we have to close when there is thunder.
Tents are mot allowed so any popups will be a challenge. Umbrellas are ok but you can't group them together.
It's $7 per car to park and $4/ person to swim. (Park in the lower lot - much closer than the old upper lot!)
Yes
Yes - at your own risk at the beach area within the roped area.
The regular campground only has 30 amp service and max equipment length of 30 feet. We do have an equestrian campground that has 50 amp service and can take lengths to 50. The problem is it does not have a bathhouse. https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/fairy-stone#camping Ferrum is 25 minutes from the park.
It's open already but lifeguards don't get there till 10
Yes, we have them in the picnic area and at all of the campsites and cabins.
No pet allowed in the beach area they have to stay in the picnic area all ways on a leash
The have been stocking rainbow trout in the late fall but not currently stocking. The great thing is they don't charge an extra free when they stock then. Here is what the Game Dept says about fishing there: https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/waterbody/fairy-stone-lake/
Here is the fee chart: https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/document/feescabins.pdf
We don't sell raw stones (which you can find for free) but we have a variety of finished fairy stones for sale. Call the park office for prices. We can sell them over the phone and ship them to you. 276-930-2424
Call the park at 276-930-2424
2 night minimum. Find the fees here: https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/document/feescabins.pdf
This is a list of our site specific sites. The length would include your trailer plus the tow vehicle so you will need at least a 35' site so watch the maximum vehicle length in this chart http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/document/site-spec-fs.pdf We have pictures of all of the site specific sites here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/vastateparksstaff/albums/72157688486413071 The campground is away from the lake area so you will probably need to drive for the fishing. Fishing is allowed with a valid Virginia fishing license. Fishing licenses are sold in the park office. A fishing area is accessible to visitors with physical disabilities. Fees here: http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/document/feescamping.pdf
Absolutely. You have to be very very quiet though and offer them muscadine wine.
Price varies by time of year, size of cabin and whether you live in Virginia or not. Here is the fee chart: http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/document/feescabins.pdf
There is no deadline. When the office closes, we leave a check in package for you and you just go to the cabin and use the provided code to enter your cabin. We do not have a gate that locks the park.
Pizza hot dogs ect coffee drinks ice cream has a small gift shop with hats tshirts cups ect. I think a large pizza was 15$ but you can pack a cooler of your own drinks and food and take it right on the beach area with you. Also has grills if you want to cook out i bought a coffee mug it was around $9 tshirts around $20 and up

10 p.m. for day users. Some facilities, like the beach, close earlier. We have cabins and camping so the park is open for those guests.
The camp host may know. He's there always, call office.
You must camp there its magical! Great for recharging your soul and inner child😊🌴💝
Depends weekdays are cheaper than weekends weekends are 4$ adult and 3$ for 11 and under week days 1$ cheaper
Yes, 5.00 parking fee, no fee to boat launch, electric motor only, or paddles of course.
They have peddle boats, canoe, flat boards, for rent or bring your own
It's been open for a while. The kids love sliding down the waterfall
a
A 5.00 parking fee and you have to buy a wristband to swim at the beach.
They are allowed and as another user said clean after them. They are not supposed to be on beach area but the day i was there there was hardly anyone and they allowed dogs in kids swimming area.
Saw some on etsy for $4. They are staurolite crystals. Just search online. Hope that helps.
