Go to the park office so you can see what they look like before they are polished, so you know what to look for.
They only allow surface hunting for them. It's best to look around roots and I can promise you will find places where people have been illegal digging with tools. Search the dirt piles they left.
The park also offers a guided program to help show you where to look and what to look for as well as information about them.
If you go to the area behind the gas station, recommend you go to the farthest point you can go for the best chance. You are not allowed to "dig" with a tool, so plan on dirty hands. Also look in the areas to the side...up on the hills around the tree be roots.
Correct...you have to go to that old gas station and follow that trail in back. Take a stick, move the surface dirt around and you'll prob find a few, although mostly imperfect. Be patient. Or, just buy some at the Fairy Stone Park Shop.
They're frequently going to be found encased in dirt which will hide the intersecting points and make them look like ordinary pebbles or mud clumps. We had a handful or two that were in this manner that we took home and soaked, and the next day we had a bowl of crosses! Don't expect perfect 90 degree angles though, those are the rare ones!
They look sorta like grey/brown gravel so look closely. You'll be surprised how many you'll find
What kind of stones do you find
