This place does a lot of good for people and did some good for me and helped me find a place...but; I had to stay at the women's shelter from mid-June until the start of August 2022 as I had nowhere else to go. After being totally honest with an intake counselor at the Norfolk CSB about my suicidal thoughts, they called the case manager at the shelter with their wishes to have me hospitalized. The CSB never provided me with a ride to the hospital and I never wanted to go, so I went back to the shelter. The shelter case manager told me I had to go, or else I'd get an "exit date". Right as I was pressured to go to the hospital waiting in an office, the one staff member who used that office in front of the computers in the day room told me to "stop crying" and gaslighted me about the whole situation. As she was calling police to take me to the hospital she was like "WERE NOT FORCING YOU TO GO" losing her mind over the semantics even though that's what was happening. She also told the dispatcher that I was having a "psychotic break" proving they know nothing about basic mental health. Keep in mind the majority of people staying here gets an extension of the time they can stay there. After spending 10 horrible days in the hospital.....first thing I get when I come back is an exit date. I can't stand being manipulated like that and having to deal with psychological abuse from a staff member in a moment of crisis. If you have to stay here and have problems with mental health, try your hardest to hide it as they will try to get rid of you as soon as they can. They didn't find me a place to live until the very last minute, keeping me on edge the entire time. Earplugs and sleep-aids are mandatory if you want to ever feel rested here. Not to mention an enormous amount of patience to deal with the regimented schedule that you have to abide by just to stay.

So apparently they dont help people with dogs. And there reason is that there’s no room for a dog. How’s that when there’s 300-500 pound people are takin in.

I don’t know when you came but due to COVID guidelines we have not been able to fill all our beds to maintain social distancing. We also have been limited by other restrictions due to the pandemic. We strive to help all that we can accommodate. Paperwork has never been an issue. Glad you found our shelter to be clean.

Please keep calling us for an available bed. We do offer Day Services where you can come in for hot meal, take a shower, wash your clothes and sit with a counselor to assist you with other things you might need until a bed is available. There is also a summer shelter open now at the Lighthouse Fellowship at 9609 9th Bay Street in the Ocean View area of Norfolk. They will provide you with a dinner meal and a place to sleep but you will have to leave in the morning.
Please call our Women and Children’s Shelter at 757-627-8686, ext 331 for availability.
I am not sure. It us best to call the mission and ask directly. From what I know. They do an intake and then keep you on a case by case sanario. Once you are in the bed and you qualify. They will work with you to help you in what ever way they can. Mostly, it is for people who are truly homeless. If you have a home you can choose to stay in that is safe and you are not being forced to leave for any reason then they will take some one who is in more need. I worked there , I did not stay as a guest but I can tell you that the staff are amazing..I loved working there!
They will want you to keep your job

I used to volunteer in the warehouse. I worked in electronics, I would check donated items, plugged them in to see if they worked, then passed them on to the thrift store. They also have people unload and sort the stuff that comes off the trucks. Call them , they are always looking for help.

Keep low expectations about the place. Expect conflicts, a lot of negatives, delusional evangelicals etc.
