Over the years this has always been a favorite location of mine. And depending on the time of year it can have different surprises to behold. Its a sculpture park, children’s park, art exhibit, nature preserve, butterfly exhibit, amphitheater, Japanese Garden (with a tea house), AND an indoor mini desert that then connects to a greenhouse forest. I mean come on! They even have a food hall and a gift shop. Seriously this place is ridiculous in the best of ways and over the years its only gotten bigger. I would recommend taking 3-4 hours to fully enjoy all that’s available . I was able to nonstop walk through most of it in about 2 hours but that was without meandering at all and only pausing to take pictures and grab a drink. But lets be honest if you have kids with you just accept it’s going to be an all day trip. If you enjoy Fields of wildflowers, walking aimlessly around staring at scenic views, and maybe learning a bit. This is for you. I wish the ticket price was a bit cheaper but in this case, due to the things that they offer during different times of the year it can be justified.

We last visited many years ago and the property has expanded and developed quite a bit since then. This is an all day trip. The only downside is the downside is the on site cafe is a little limited. That being said, reentry is allowed so you can go off site for lunch and then return. If you are visiting in the summer be sure to bring a hat, water bottles to refill, and a good pair of walking shoes. The children's garden is very well developed and full of activities that will keep younger children entertained. Much of the site is wheelchair accessible. There are many paths that are not, if they say that a path is "rough and uneven" it is not wheelchair accessible. Definitely worth the price of admission. Parking is on site and was free when we were there.

This was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. There is way more to see than the eye let's on. The ticket price of $18 is well worth the amount of park to cover. There is also a great indoor area to explore as well. The park sections are well taken care of and it was a true delight to walk the trails and see wildlife in its natural form. We probably spent more time looking at the frogs, tadpoles, and chipmunks than anything else. There is staff readily available anywhere in the park. The Japanese Gardens is definitely a highlight and a must see. However, there is not nearly enough shaded areas to take refuge in during hot summer days in some of the outdoor sections. With little cloud cover the particular Sunday I went, it was too much to continue on and finish the park. The park recommends giving yourself at least 2 hours, but honestly, you should plan for 3 or 4 if you like to stop and observe. It's a great way to spend a large portion of your day.

It was really cool to see international sculptures in grand rapids. I've personally never been to a sculpture garden but it's cool to listen to everyone's interpretation of what they think the sculpture represents if the artist won't tell you. Sometimes the artists actually visit the gardens which is really cool to hear what they have to say about their own work. The Japanese garden was may favorite, probably because of my affinity for Japanese culture and art. They have a tea house in which they actually do tea ceremonies there every once in a while, but you have to reserve a spot for yourself if you want to experience that. There are plenty of different types of flora and lots of ponds and waterfalls. A very nice place to forget all of your issues and just relax. When I went it was like 90° F so I was focusing more on not being dehydrated but I did take some time to sit on a bench in the shade and just reflect. The art is very abstract if you're into that. Plus the visitor center is air-conditioned so it feels nice to go in after being in the hot sun.

Indoor gardens a cool, not as much to do, but still fun
Most of the Gardens will be open. Rodin sculpture exhibit, Arid, Victorian and Tropical gardens inside the main building. Outside, Children's, Farm, Japanese and Shade gardens. Also the sculpture park and Frey boardwalk. The tram will not be running.

Open, and take the team tour for a wonderful overview of the property.
There a lot of hotels and motels. But in case you don't want to be disappointed choose hotel. I had a bad experience booking Knigh Inn motel(
not sure Google it!the team ride is amazing
We didn't experience any issues with going this morning either. We forgot about the construction that is going on, so make sure to enter the main entrance and not the side entrance. Signs for parking are informative, and the walk was a little breezy and crisp this morning.
Tuesday are good because they are open later, till 9pm
Sunday hours are 11-5, according to the website. Don't arrive at 5pm!
No
You can bring a seated walker, wheelchair,Electronic Power Chair, etc.
Yes, always be prepared. There are always indoor and outdoor exhibits!
Yes
Members must be present with guests and show ID. Enjoy your visit!
Not sure but maybe you can call and ask?
Yes it is open and closed at 9pm
Probably not too bad. Like waiting in line for a cashier the day before a huge snowstorm is about to hit. Annoying but tolerable. Put kids in clothes that won't get too itchy and hot and remember to use the restroom beforehand.
Hi Kay! We are open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. We hope you can visit us sometime soon.
Hi Joan! Our Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition happens every year in March & April. You can see butterflies starting late February.
Was not at the peak on Saturday. So maybe 2 more weeks, mid October
One ticket is good all day, including the Tuesday Evening Music Club performances. Enjoy your visit!
Hi Linda, Our Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition runs every March and April. We will not have any butterflies on display (other than those that occur naturally outside) in August. Enjoy your visit!
Hi Richard, The Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition runs every March and April, more information can be found on our website at https://www.meijergardens.org/calendar/butterflies-are-blooming/ We are open year round, we hope that you can enjoy a visit soon!
All tickets are purchased on-site in the Daniel & Pamella DeVos Ticketing Center in our new Welcome Center. Enjoy your visit!
Yes! We only close three days of the year - Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Enjoy your visit!
There is a link on their website to a field trip registration form. It's listed under the school groups
We went on 3/30; arrived at noon and were in line for about 2 hours until we finally stepped into the butterfly greenhouse. The website says the Butterflies Are Blooming experience lasts through April 30th.
Average life of butterflies is 2 weeks. During March and April, they import chrysalis (pupa) every week from different tropical countries. These butterflies eventually die out..
If you buy a pass/annual membership you can get right in line inside
I was there 2/28 and the butterflies are there. Many cocoons are staged and ready to hatch.
Outside, hummingbirds will have left for warmer climates until next spring, probably late April or May
They do not require an appointment or reservation. They require a mask and social distance. Lots of hand sanitizer is located in the main rooms.
I was there two weeks ago and not outside food was allowed
They are probably a little looser about food from outside since restaurant is closed but I wouldn't suggest picnic baskets or coolers. Free parking.
Enough that you should probably just purchase a family membership for $90.
Can confirm: No boats, but water area is open.
If you have your ticket you can return!
They are doing grab-and-go items only.
On Saturday the 14th they have winter walks. It is a walk through the children's garden with activities and songs. There is a good chance they will have their Christmas tree display going too.
Adults are $14.50. Seniors 65 and older as well as students with ID are $11 Children 5 to 13 years of age are $7 and 4 years of age and younger are $4.
Yes. It does cost a little extra, and it's more of an overall tour than a mode of transportation.
I don't know. I know they accept cards and cash.
If you keep him on the walkway, you MAY be alright. There is a couple butterfly attractions and plenty of bugs in this wonderful open air exhibit. A thought towards the safety of other guests should be considered also pending the tenacity of your "bug hunter".
You can fold it up as best as you can and sit it beside you. I'm sure that that wouldn't be an issue. No one can keep you from having it with you, that would be unfair & mean (and probably unlawful). I would just call them and ask them, if I were you, so that you are 100% clear on their policies and everything. They'll give you more up to date and more accurate information on their own policies than we Google Guides typically can on here. I hope that this answer helps to point you in the right direction.
No they are not permitted unless they are a service dog. We were able to leave our dog in our rv and it was better that way. The place is incredible and worth the visit

Nice answer Lion Chaser 🦁 🏃
Yes they are open. They only close on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Years Day.
Yes
No, sadly, dogs are not allowed in.
You can purchase a pass, not sure about giftcards.
Yes. We were just through all of it with a double stroller. The whole place is designed with kids being present even if it's not the children's garden portion.
Yes they will be open you only close for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day
They never release the butterflies
yes
You may want to call them to find out. My guess is no.
No,they'll be gone. But there is so much to enjoy. Be sure to make the trip anyway.
~$14 for an adult. Beautiful though, would highly recommend.
Full access day passes start at $14.50 per adult and go down depending on status. Children are cheaper and free under a certain age. Otherwise there are a variety of yearly memberships as well. I hope this helps!
The butterflies are wheelchair accessible. They just check your chair closely when you exit.
The American Horse statue was built in 1999 by animal sculptor Nina Akamu. It was partially inspired by a 15th century Leonardo Da Vinci drawing.
I would recommend just checking the weather first. Most of the gardens are inside but there is also probably an hour's worth of art outside
Yes it is.
Thru the parking lot right off 37.
I'd say an hour to an hour and a half for everything indoors.
the butterflies are inside, you can tour the inside gardens while working your way to the greenhouse where the butterflies are. I can be a walk from your car to the pavillion, and you may have to wait in question to get into the building. You need to be dressed for outside chill then tropical heat and humidity in the greenhouse. You may want to walk the grounds and see the sculptures while there.
With all the construction going on, be ready to put some serious walking in
Unsure, worth calling them to ask though I suppose :)
Depends on how long you want to hang out in there. Probably want to spend at least an hour walking through the botanical gardens and butterflies. Hang up your coat before you go in though, it's very humid. 🦋
20-30 minutes. Dress in layers. It's quite hot in there, but cooler inside everywhere else and the garden outside is also beautiful.
And please be aware the new walk is long
Call them to verify.
Now! They're beautiful! I believe they'll be there for another month and a half or so.
9am to 5pm
Short answer: currently $14.50, ages 14-64. Many variations, so see www.meijergardens.org/plan
Check their website or call when they are open. Butterflies start March 1.
The best way to know is calling them.
Yes
Most likely, considering much is indoors, but you'd have to call to make sure.
March to April, Spring time. Website link https://www.meijergardens.org/calendar/butterflies-are-blooming/
Yes! Things like drinking fountains are shut down outside in the winter. But all gardens remain open to walk through. Adults (14-64) are $14.50 Children (5-13) are $7 Children (3-4) are $4 And children under 2 are free. Students with an id are $11
Not really. Lots of new construction outdoors. All Christians decorations are inside.
No. Seniors, kids, groups, and members get discounts. You can check admissions prices on their website here: http://www.meijergardens.org/plan/#hours-rates
Yes
Meijer Gardens is closed on Thanksgiving Christmas and New year's
They where working on them last week when I went. I would think they would done with it by now, but I could be wrong.
About 1.25 miles or 2 kilometers.
Are they running on April 3rd?
There were bo aigns saying it was nore vut it had beautiful pieces if art through the building and outside a few extra sculptures.
No. Although there's an enormous horse statue which is awesome to see.
If you must have a wheelchair and are not bringing your own, then I would call.
I know they have some just before the entrance, don't think they require reservation but it may be wise to call beforehand just in case.
Under construction from July 1 2018 until December 31 2020. But it's all still open.
They don't, they're open 362 days a year, the days they're not open are Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
No
Don't know about any risk of being stuck by lightning, a lot of the sculptures do have lights that shine on them. The sculpture you are referring to is new this year and may still be in the installation phase.
Like Garden Chairs.
Yes!
No, I am pretty sure only really small children have to be accompanied by an adult. I believe a teenager and above would be fine going in by themselves.
14 to 64& up Is free, the rest of us pay...
I looked in both the spring and summer issue catalogs and there was nothing going on for Memorial Day
I don't believe I saw something like that. But best to look at their website or call ahead.
Be sure to check out the butterfly exhibit.
Well worth it. Lots to see other than the butterflies. Lots of kids field trips during week. I get there almost every year
If you have the picture you should be able to get it enlarged at Meijer in their photo area
Walk... Different environments... Marsh.,Japanese garden, sculpture garden, kids gardens
The restaurant inside the gardens is available most hours. The food is delicious and reasonably priced.
The Frederik&Lena Meijer Botanical and Sculpture Gardens is a jewel in the city of Grand Rapids. No matter the season, time of year or special exhibit which is being displayed. The time one spends there will surely delight and reward your senses. The price of admission is money well spent, if your visit was enjoyable enough, you might want to consider at the days end, to purchase a membership. The cost of admission will be subtracted from the cost of membership. Kudos to the Meijer Family for being so philanthropic.
The list is on the website
Yes it is a interesting question. Profesional or not they have policys that apply to all for the taking of pictures. I do know one area that they enforce is group photos and set ups. Lets think here for a minute people, people pay thousands if not tens of thousands dollar to have the right and privilege to use the Garden and all that it offers. A few weeks ago I was reading that they even have a policy concerning drones.
There is only one stop that they make and you are allowed to get off at and that is the Japanese Gardens.
The tram does go by the japanese garden entrance. If you are going with a friend who is able to walk and push a wheelchair, there are complementary wheelchairs at the meijer garden entrance. I have pushed a friend around the japanese garden path that way.

It is free to see the Art Prize and Rodin exhibition in the sculpture gallery. Normal admission to enter the other areas of the Gardens.
Powered chairs are allowed but are not available. Standard wheelchairs are available in the entryway. There is a tram that gives you an overview of the sculpture park. The tram runs April into October. The tram station is a bit of a walk from the entrance.
I don't believe that that door is a feature of the Japanese Garden. The small door is access to a small storage area next to the entrance. Wheelchairs, supplies for events, and other temporary items are stored there. In theory, if the main doors where secured from the inside an authorized person could enter through the small door to unbar the main doors.
The Japanese Garden is open year round. Some paths in the Japanese Garden are closed in the winter months. Last year this included both paths to the Tea House. The Tea House itself is open for public tours one Sunday each summer month. The remaining days for 2017 are Sept. 17th and Oct. 22nd. The Tea House is also open for paid tea ceremonies.
