Amazing sites and well marked trail. We arrived after dark. The 1mile hike to the campsites were very well marked. With the moon shinning we didnβt require any flashlights. The trail itself is flat enough you could push/pull a cart/wheelbarrow on it. The sites were set back off the main walk way. Made them feel secluded and private. Sites were very well maintained. Nice platform for the picnic table and fire ring, then another for pitching your tents. Bathrooms were pit toilets, but the stalls were all clean. Didnβt even see any spider webs! We plan to go back.

quiet, peaceful park. We walked the pasture and did some of the trails in the woods, was not crowded first thing in the morning.

There is an overnight parking lot that you can use for $10, and camping is permitted. Take a minute and check the parks website for more information.
Yes. Must be on a leash not to exceed six feet.
The visitor center has nature exhibits and a gift shop. It's open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
So the park opens at 8 am with the visitor center opening at 11 am on weekdays and 10 am on weekends!
$5 for a day pass and $66 for Virginia state park year pass.
I dont believe so.
Definitely check with the office. I am sure you may be able to register on line and pick up your tag when you arrive and drop your payment in the honor box.
You can put money in the envelope provided at entrance and get in during weekends.
We have picnic shelters that can be reserved. Anything more than a simple picnic (music, play equipment, etc.) would have to be approved by the park and would involve a special use permit.
William and Fernando gave excellent answers. The only equestrian lot is located at the east side of the park entrance.
Our parks are open 365 days a year unless we have a weather or emergency closing and we will always post those here: https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/sky-meadows in the top box under the picture. I am not at the park so not sure of current snow status. You might try calling them at 540-592-3556.
There are picnic tables and grills by the children's garden.
The park closes at dusk and is only open for special evening programs. They have one scheduled for Saturday. https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/park-event-info?id=SK200006-02
Yes we reopened camping May 21. Our call center is still understaffed so we recommend online reservations. https://www.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDirectoryList.do?contractCode=va
Scroll down on this page to the history https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/sky-meadows#other_info. It mentions two connections to the Settles. If you would like more information, call the park. The phone number is at the top of that page.
You won't see much from the roads. Usually we either let folks drive in and come out without a charge but be sure not to park even for a few minutes because the ticket is $25. Alternately we may ask someone to pay and if you come back in a certain amount of time we will refund.
sorry no.
I believe the park closes at dusk, unless one intends to camp (open all year). They have meteor shower watch parties during the warmer months (3 of them). However, I don't believe one is scheduled for the Geminids. I'd recommend calling the park during business hours and asking.
There are no swimming spots that I'm aware of in the park. Turner Pond would be the only logical place, but there are some large Snapping Turtles in residence and the bottom is extremely muddy. I believe Shenandoah River State Park has swimming available. I have to say, dipping one's toes in Gap Run creek after hiking Piedmont, Ambassadors White House, North Ridge, and Gap Run trails is pretty close to heaven. Hope this helps.
The building with the gift shop has a fully functional indoor restrooms. There is also restrooms at the picnic area that is in a stand alone building. I didnt see any restooms or portable toilets on the trail.
No, none of our state parks offer motorized trails. The national forests do though so check with the George Washington-Thomas Jefferson National Forest. Also if you travel to far southwestern Virginia, checkout Spearhead Trails.
