I tried to hike to shelter #2 and lost the trail within 1000 feet of the trailhead! Not marked at all. I hiked back to my car and called it a day. Never back packing here again!

Feel confident about exploring with a compass and map, thanks to Ranger Michael Hudson. Thanks to the park for offering these events, especially at prices that all can afford.

Absolutely beautiful area! Very rustic! I even got to see a wild baby timber rattlesnake there! 😊

"The name is thought to have been derived from an event during the American Civil War in which a tannery located at a river landing on the site of the present day state park caught fire. The tannery was infested with an unusually large number of mice which fled the burning tannery in the direction of the landing, giving the landing its present name." - Wikipedia
