The house and museum are lovely as is the artists work. The guides however could be a little less chatty and just let the guests enjoy looking at the art without constantly talking while in the galleries.

What a delightful art home and studio tour! We had not heard of Gari Melcher and were amazed at the range of gorgeous artwork that he created. The docents are knowledgable in small details and interesting facts. To find a home and art studio from a distinquished artist completely intact down to the cigarette box and childhood photos was such a surprise. Just a few minutes drive from downtown and don't miss the gardens! The giftshop is filled with treasures!

Nice trails and gift shop. Sometimes you can take a tour of the historic house and art studio. In the spring and summer there are nice gardens.

Charleen, our research indicates that Dr. Alexander Vass and his wife Mary Ann Thornton Vass built the house in the late 1790s to early 1800. The house was later added on to by later owners. No reference to Wm Fitzhugh has been uncovered.
