We went on the yearly cemetery walk, the volunteers were in period dress and described the lives of the people that made Springfield what it is today. It was a beautiful day for a walk and we learned a lot. It was also helpful the had a small school bus to take you to the beginning of the tour and then back to where you parked. Oak Ridge is a stunning cemetery, well designed and where Lincoln and his family are buried. They had Lincolns funeral coach on display, next to his original tomb.

Lincoln's grave. Parking is free. I entered the grave for free. You can read about Lincoln's upbringing, and the atmosphere of the place is solemn. I don't know if it's a volunteer staff, but there's a staff member wearing green clothes near the grave, do you have any questions? he said kindly. I think it's a good place to visit once.

Beautiful Cemetery that holds the remains of one the most revered men that ever existed- Abraham Lincoln. It does my heart good that my father will rest on the same grounds as this man. LaShonda Fitch is a very respectful and caring Cemetery Director that understood our families wants and needs. Thanks for everything LaShonda!

What is Perpetual care in Oak Ridge?

Carolyn Fisher | Oct 3, 2021
Oak Ridge Cemetery | Oct 3, 2021

Carolyn, thank you for the question. We no longer use the term perpetual care. At Oak Ridge Cemetery, endowment care is that care and maintenance necessitated by natural growth and ordinary wear which can be provided at reasonable intervals with income from the endowment care fund, and includes the planting, cutting, watering, and care of lawns, trees and shrubs; the cleaning and upkeep of buildings; and maintenance of utilities, walls, roadways, and walks. The management may also use a portion of the income from suchfund for such general care, maintenance, repairs and embellishment as it, in its sound discretion, shall deem to be for the best interest of the cemetery to the end that the cemetery generally be kept in the best condition possible within the limits of such income. Yes it's Tuesday nights

We noticed that at several places within Oak Ridge Cemetery, there are several cannons that are buried with the barrel buried in the ground and the back end sticking almost straight up. Why?? There seemed to be very old gravestones near each one.

I contacted the cemetery directly and the employees there did not have an answer. Of course, I googled it first. I am still coming up blank. I’ve visited a fair number of cemeteries in the past, and never seen this before.
