Wow - I sent a relatively short-term inquiry to the NY consultant and received an answer within a very short time, which helped me a lot. Top employees! Top service!

By far the best visa appointment, I've ever had. They are quick and if you have all the documents that are listed on their website, it won't take more than 5 minutes. I received my passport with stamped visa in 2 days!

The Consulate is currently short-staffed due to Covid restrictions, but the staff were all extremely friendly, accommodating and professional. They helped us understand the details of every document needed for our Visa applications to ensure that they were processed rapidly. Would grant more than 5 stars if I could.

No. You don't unless of course you planned on staying there for more that 90 days.
First you need to go on the Swiss embassy website and make an online appointment. It depends on which state you live in. If you live in NY there is an embassy there. Before you go to the appointment, you need to Buy your flight ticket and a minimum of $50000 of travel insurance. The insurance does not cost much.then take two passport pictures. Have your bank statement ready because you need to prove that you have enough fund to care for yourself while there. You also need a letter from your employer, proving that you have a job here in the US.And if you are staying with family, they need to send a letter of invitation to the Swiss embassy for you. When you attend your appointment, you will need all of those documents ready with your valid passport, a certified paid envelop with your address on it from UPS or FedEx so, they can mail your passport with your Visa back to you and they will also take your fingerprint. I hope this helps.
There is no fee to leave transit at the Zürich Kloten airport.
Probably best to just send an email or call. They usually respond within a few business hours.
How do I find out about my mother who lived in Switzerland in the 1960's? That is, her immigration status at that time
If he is a Swiss citizen, and he's completed his ESTA application or has an active tourist visa (latter not required for CH citizens), he can leave the airport, go through immigration, and go to an airport hotel. The most important thing is the ESTA clearance.
