So beautiful and quiet. Being from NJ & our beaches are just completely different, I simply could not stop taking photo's. We visited the lighthouse on a Thursday late afternoon & both the lighthouse & beach directly across the street were pretty much empty, quiet and serene. Met a friendly couple on the beach & there sweet little dog just lapping up the sun & the waves. Peaceful for sure. The board walkway was long & mirrandering with educational highlights and built in benches along the way. Photo's don't do it justice.

Parking is just a bit down on the left. Use the walk way to back track to the light. You must make reservations to go up in the light. Please be aware you will be climbing ship ladders. It wasn't bad at all. But be prepared. All items must be secured or in your pocket. The staff is great and happy you are visiting them.

It was a spontaneous visit to Oak Island, so we decided to visit the light house. The light house looks so cool and look pretty great from the outside but it was closed since we didn't have reservation to go inside. Another review I read here on yelp said we need to make reservation to go inside the light house. Since we didn't get to go in, we crossed across the street and visit the beach. Still a good visit nevertheless.

Definitely worth a stop to check out if in the area. There is a very small parking lot directly in front of the lighthouse, but another one just beyond it on the right. If you park in this lot you can enjoy a walk on a walkway with different signage with facts about the lighthouse.

Yes. Times are limited. Guided tours are available to the top of the lighthouse by appointment/reservation in advance. Schedule tours on the lighthouse website or by phone. If you plan to go, be aware that there is no spiral staircase as found in most lighthouses, but rather a series of ship's ladders with many steps a very narrow passageway. Being in decent physical health and contition is a plus. If you have breathing problems or a heart condition, please climb at your discretion. When you go, be sure you are wearing tennis shoes (no flip flops or sandals allowed) or you WILL NOT be permitted beyond the first platform. They will not allow you to climb the ladders to the top.
The tower was poured in September 1957. The light was not officially lit until May 1958.
Yes, but you will find the best "shelling grounds" at the Point, the farthest Southwest end of Oak Island during low tide. Follow East Beach Dr. past Middleton, where East Beach changes to West Beach Dr. Follow W. Beach to the Dead End at the Public Parking Beach Access and continue walking Southwest along the beach until you reach the end of Oak Island at the Lockwood Folly's Intracoastal Waterway Inlet (The Point). About 250-300 yards accross the inlet you will be looking at Holden Beach. The ocean current generally tends to pull to the South and West which ultimately brings the most shells to that end of the island. Low tide at The Point is a shellers "Honey Hole". Enjoy your vacation.
Technically speaking, you are not climbing steps like the spiral staircases found in almost all lighthouses. The Oak Island Lighthouse has a series of ship's ladders like you would find on a Navy ship. To answer your question a little more accurately, there are 131 ladder rungs to climb.
The lighthouse was closed when we went to visit.
Google maps will display that information if you bother to ask it
Ud wanna take the ferry for the best option. Its 7 bucks to do so. But its a 30 minute ride so
Unfortunately no. In any event the lighthouse was closed due to covid-19.. so in any event, you won't be able to climb up right now
Yes
They are closed until after September 25th, when they will reevaluate opening again.
Fifteen miles. This is due to the height of the light which allows the beam to travel over the curvature of the Earth. The calculation is the square root of the height of the observer times 1.17, so at the water line a six foot person can see the horizon three miles away, up on top of the lighthouse that distance increases to fifteen miles. You asked.
This might help. Link to the lighthouse site http://www.oakislandlighthouse.org/tour-information/
I'm sorry your visit to the lighthouse didn't go as you planned. All the information is on their website including age and footwear requirements. Please see the link below for all information. Please book another appointment, for the next time you are at Oak Island. The climb to the balcony is a steep climb up ships ladders, not a spiral staircase. However, the view from the balcony is simply amazing. http://www.oakislandlighthouse.org/tour-information/
The light can be seen at 24 nautical miles out to sea. Below is a link to a video done by Our State Magazine that has a lot of info. http://www.oakislandlighthouse.org/2012/07/07/see-the-lighthouse-story-on-unc-tv/
I know they are during the Summer no.t sure about the off season
The concrete used to construct the lighthouse was colored so that it would never have to be painted. This is a huge cost savings and one of the unique and innovative features of this lighthouse.
Call and ask, it's a beautiful place!
I believe it's free to visit, they do take donations and sell some T-shirts and other cool keepsakes and the like to help make up the cost
This is what the website says. "Built in 1957 the light was lit the first time in May 1958." I couldn't find a specific timeframe.
I belive they are open 10am to 8pm, but if you would like a tour it has to be schedule ahead of time. If beautiful plus great location for pictures.
No cost to climb, but you have to make a reservation. They do accept donations and sell souvenirs, as they are all volunteers. I highly recommend checking it out.
Free, but I don't believe the public is allowed to access the top.
They do have certain hours and when I was there you had to schedule trips to go in
