Unfortunately I arrived around 5pm and the tours and gate to enter had closed at 4pm. The road leading up to the monument was a little over miles and was windy. In addition to the cave tour there appeared to be several hiking trails. Elevation was 4000 ft. I would check the website prior to making the drive to see if it’s open. Apparently they close during part of the year. I can’t wait to go back and take the cave tour.

Great place to visit and go hiking. There is lots to see, plenty of wildlife if you are quiet and fantastic views.

The Oregon Caves National Monument is 20 miles from its closest city, Cave Junction. There are several motels there. The Chateau in the Park will not open until May 3rd, 2018 for the summer season.
Children must be at least 42inches (107 cm) tall, pass a steep stair test unassisted, and be able to listen and follow directions from a Ranger to participate in a cave tour. Children cannot be carried through the cave and childcare services are not available.
Hi - I'm a ranger here at the Oregon Caves - and it is possible everyday spring through early November to buy walk up tickets. In the summer, it can get busy early in the afternoon and wait times can get to be up to two hours, so it is a good idea to reserve up to one day ahead of time if you can: recreation.gov. Long wait times generally happen between 12:00 and 4:00. Arriving early will save you time. Also, during the summer months you can buy tickets in Cave Junction at the Illinois Valley Visitor Center ahead of time, which can save you about one hour of wait time for a tour. Most of our tours are for everyone, but we do have special tours especially for kids and families, a candlelight tour, and an off trail wild caving adventure tour. Visit: www.nps.gov/orca
Technically a cave is a cavity, and if you are in an organ, and not the state of Oregon, I'd have to say yes because that would have to be one BIG organ. :)
Walking handicapped? Nope! You need to be sure you are steady. If you fall tough can't grab onto the cave walls...can't because they don't want you touching it and also there might not be much to grab into. They also don't recommend because there are spaces you have to duck and steps.
It's paved and safe. We towed a 26' trailer without issue.
The surface hiking trails are, Caves are closed for the season.
Hello Luke, The surface areas of the Monument and Preserve remain open year-round with beautiful views of the Siskiyou mountains and wonderful trails through old growth forests. The caves, however, are closed in the winter months. Our normal operating season is mid-March through early November. The 2021 season was cut short due to the local spread of COVID-19. Thank you for your question.
Hello Melvin, When the caves are open and operating we provide all needed light sources. To help reduce the spread of White-Nose syndrome, we do not allow any personal caving equipment. The only access to this cave system is via guided tour, which are currently closed, operations for 2022 have not yet been announced. Thank you for your question!
I would say don't risk it if you want to to live.
Hello L San, Thank you for your question regarding the Historic Chateau The Oregon Caves Chateau construction project will have a temporary suspension while the existing lateral structural system is being analyzed by the design team. The current project mainly addressed life/safety exiting, accessibility, and fire hazard issues with minimal lateral strengthening. It is now the intent to significantly improve the lateral system to provide proper reinforcement in a seismic event. With removal of the wall finishes, it is now evident that there are deficiencies in both the framing as well as the condition of the concrete retaining walls. All of these deficiencies will be addressed as part of the seismic reinforcement project. The anticipated completion of the lateral structural design and resumption of the interior work on the original contract is July of 2021. Once the work is completed on the lateral strengthening systems, we will have an updated time of completion from the contractor.
They definitely told us. Why didn't you accompany your kid lulz
Thank you, Linda. Are there lots of stairs too?
A number of great hikes including a very steep climb from the Cave Creek Campground to the Oregon Caves.
