One of my favorite places on earth. Quite the walk but with proper walking shoes, well worth it and enjoyable. Set aside a few hours entirely for the round trip walk and sitting and reading through entries as well as writing your own.

My wife and I walked to the box from sunset beach. It was right around 2 miles one way, a very nice walk. The picture I posted was from Taken from behind the mailbox. This location would be great for your Christmas card photo. We didn't read any of the notebooks, but found that some people were studying them quite carefully. All in all, a good experience!

Great experience, well worth the walk..beautiful beachfront area and dunes

I recommend starting the walk two hours before sunset. As you return back to 40th street you are welcomed with the best views.

Hey! Not sure when you actually asked this question to the fact there is no date! The items in the mail box are stored at NC College. There is a few people you can contact to try and find you letter in question! As to they have items still from the 60s even! The History department in the college is the area that holds the items and catalogs them to go in storage there!
High tide shouldn't be a problem unless full moon or a storm is pushing in. No snakes. No restrooms. The time for the walk depends on your starting spot. If you go to the end of the paved road, take the boardwalk out to the beach it is less than 30 minutes.
Visited again last week. Probably a mile maybe a mile and a half down the beach. The high/low tide issue doesn't exist anymore they fixed the little inlet so no need to worry about that. Have fun !
Yes it is free.
The beach is always open. No guarantee on nice weather.
It is up on a small sand dune. Couple of benches to sit on while you read or write in the journals. Well worth the walk. Enjoy. There was no flag there when I went.
After you come over the bridge and drive down the causeway, turn right at the intersection. Go to the end, which is 40th Street. There are four parking spaces there. If they are taken, there are places to park along the road. The walk from there, once you get down to the beach is 1.4 miles just to get to Kindred Spirit. So, around 3 miles round trip. If you park at the pier, you'll add on another 1/2 mile, at least, making it around a 4-5 mile roundtrip.
The closest we found is still about 1.5 mile walk. When you hit to the Sunset Beach Pier turn right and park on the side of the road. We walked out on the last beach access with a walkway, which was a very long walkway. The sign at the end was 1.5 miles to mailbox and 1.8 to jetty. That walkway is at 40th street.
You can. Or, you can just write in one of the journals. However you feel comfortable doing it. Please understand that the message you place in the mailbox is not truly private. UNCW publishes the letters and artifacts in the mailbox "for research purposes." The collection is available through UNCW Special Collections.
Yes there is
I have read the book. There are letters in the mailbox but not about the book. Anyone who visits can read or write a letter. You can also respond to letters as you desire.
It's 1.5 miles of beach sand to get to it. No roads of any kind. Don't know if that answers your question. :)
It is a mile walk down the sand.
Yes during certain tines of the year.
According to his notes in Every Breath he did visit the mailbox.
