Stopped here on the way from Vegas to the Joshua Tree area. I wish I would have spent more time here and less time in the Mojave Preserve. The boys loved the dried lava rock. They do have restrooms in the parking lot which is a plus.

This was an awesome day trip! The hike to the crater wasn't far and not too challenging. You can walk around the rim of the crater, I can't wait to come back with my telescope as it greats exceptionally dark there.

It was about a 45 minute hike from the parking lot to the top of the crater on a slow and steady pace, so it's easily a 2 hour round trip. Hiking up/down the crater portion itself was about a 15 minute hike on a 45% incline with some loose gravel, so I'd definitely recommend wearing a good pair of hiking shoes.
It's free basically because it's in the middle of nowhere it's very hot this time of year I don't recommend visiting until mid October. It's a picnic area with pit toilets there is no Campground but you're allowed to Camp along the road to the crater from Highway 66
As far as I know, they have trails, it is beautiful country there.
Yes,about 3 for me..had to stop for pics...lol..very beautiful and worth the hike.
