A real natural gem that feels out of the way but is quite close to the Philadelphia Airport and downtown Philadelphia. Great walking paths with lots of wildlife around. Nice visitor center with some exhibits and restroom facilities.

Wonderful spot for a nice walk! It is full of life with birds, fish, turtles and more all over the place. Some lovely flowers are located at the entrance as well 🐟

A nice place for all kind of outdoor activities, singles, couple n and family. Fishing hiking, biking, trailing ,cane ride and much more. A must visit when you in Philadelphia and it's minutes away from the airport. Why not 💥💥💥

Stopped by before heading to the airport. It was really beautiful even during an overcast afternoon. We saw several birds, deer and oodles of turtles! The marsh overlook offered plenty of viewing space. Encountered a handful of runners, walkers and bird watchers during our time. There are some fun things to look at including a visitor's center. Loved the bee garden as well 🐝

Late Senator Heinz advocated for this area to be held aside as a refuge. Previous plans were for I95 to be built through the marsh habitat that is at the center of the refuge.
Trails are open, but refuge gates will be closed until the parking lots can be plowed. Trails will not be maintained.
As far as I know, the refuge does not have a program to receive animals. However, there are wildlife rehabilitation/transition centers near Philadelphia. If you give John Heinz a call, a ranger will be able to give you specific contact information.
Definitely, there's a nice flat gravel path around the lake.
1/4" crushed stone/grey gravel, and dirt, most of it is not paved
No food, it's nature trails & some people fish there & some ride bikes I will agree that when you see mud don't try & navigate it you won't win!!! Turn around & go another way you'll see shoes left behind from others that tried it & wasn't successful some even tried placing pieces of found wood across certain spots & still ended up being stuck. I live around the corner & used to go pretty regularly with my dogs that I always had flea & tick treated & one day I found myself picking ticks off my dog from that day forward I don't bring my dogs anymore in summer time maybe when cold out but not any kind of warm weather, That being said I do advise bringing and using a can of deep woods off or something similar & if your a woman I would atleast make sure your hair is up & maybe a hat also & men hats also!!!
You don't pay a dime. Just leave before dusk.
