Honored to have visited this Battleship / Museum…. Grateful and Thankful for the Sacrifices these Brave Men and Women have made for Our Country and for the World. I think it is necessary for the Younger Generation to Experience the History of Our Past and Be Aware of the Freedoms We Have that Came with Great Bravery, Determination, Focus, and Teamwork as Military Personnel. History should never be forgotten and always learned from. Big Thanks to Everyone Involved and Those Preserving this Legacy and Great Museum Memorial. 🕊🦅🙏🏼☮️🇺🇸☮️🙏🏼🦅🕊

A quick stop 2 hour tour of this magnificent battleship that plied the waters in service of the United States from World War 2 to its final decommissioning in 2011 to become the floating museum it is today. The self guided tour takes you to nearly every quarter of the ship. There are other exhibits not associated with the Iowa aboard. Aside from various small bits aboard screwed down to avoid breakage by guests...the Iowa looks as though she could set sail with a hardy crew ready to helm the ship. Docents roam the deck ready with history and facts. The cost for 4 adults is a healthy $95 + change. There is of course discounts for students, seniors and veterans. Is it worth it? I say yes. The amount of history aboard alone is worth the cost of a few hours, the friendliness of the docents is more than worth the money and time. There is a gift shop at the end of the tour... The amount of goodies and curios will keep battle ship fans for another 30 minutes....

I really enjoyed my tour of the Iowa. We had the chance to view the Captain's berth and see the tub that had been installed for FDR. The tour guides were friendly and informative. We had lunch on the fantail of the ship. The hot dogs they sell there are delicious. There's a good amount of container ship traffic so you can sit, eat your lunch and watch the ships go by. Schedule half a day for your tour.

This has to be one of my favorite military museums that I’ve ever been to and I am from San Diego. The history of the ship is extremely well documented so I won’t go into that but meeting some former engineers and sailors who actually served on the ship when it was in duty was a true pleasure and honor. That opportunity is quickly slipping away as time goes on. Parking is easier than easy and right in front of the ship and what I like most about it is you follow a set route through the ship that leads you through the entire thing up three levels and into the bowels of the ship. I was told that you can pay for extra tours of certain areas of the ship but those require reservations and are a different fee. Overall an amazing museum and some thing every American should visit. If you’re a fan of anything to do with engineering, sailing, military, engines, combat, or history you have to come here immediately. I would not suggest it for anyone who has mobility issues though because you will have to climb many sets of narrow stairs and also I am 6’3” and had to duck my head every time I was inside because the ceilings are pretty low so it is not designed for tall people either. 5/5!

The Full Steam Ahead tour takes you through Aft Plot (Gun Control), Fire Room 2, Engine Room 4, Dental, Sick Bay, Flag Staterooms, Combat Engagement Center (Missile Control) and if time permits other areas not on the normal public tour route. Currently the tours are conducted twice a day on Saturdays and Sundays. If demand is sufficient there are plans to open it up on weekdays.
Yes, they just need to present an Iowa drivers licence or ID at ticket window.
Depends on what you decide to do. General admission is $19.99. then you can add a flight simulator, other museums too. Worth the price of admission!
Yes you can.
Of course unless you want to stand in the parking lot and get a bite to eat at the burger and beer joint.
Being a plank owner of the Iowa. She can always be seaworthy in a matter or a couple weeks. The boilers are preserved and the main engines are in tip top shape. I have stood watch in all 4 engine rooms and a couple of fire rooms and there are pumps in there that belong to the engine room. I would gladly ( and proudly ) steam her again. She is a beautiful ship and I love her. Don’t ever forget, she has been commissioned 3 times. MM 3 Bradley. 7/83-7/87 plankoner and proud.
There's parking right in front of the ship, a very very short walk. It's $2 per hour, up to a maximum of $18.
Plenty of parking as far as I see. Never full . You are good to go.
We are located at the Port of Los Angeles. San Pedro is a neighborhood in Los Angeles.
Yes
Yes. Military and veterans receive $2 off the ticket price. If you purchase your tickets online, you'll see this option. https://www.pacificbattleship.com/museum_visit/museum_tours/ Free days for veterans and active military are Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
Don't recall seeing any gifts around the turret 2 area. Perhaps best check with the staff on duty.
As stated on their website, they are open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas, from 10am to 5pm.
$19.50 for adults, $16.50 for señors Family membership of 2 adults and up to 5 children is only $90.00. I can't recall children admission.
Yes follow signs
Im not sure. But if your from Iowa you get to tour for free.
Not a hundred percent sure but I think so. There is a gift shop at the end of tour if not you can buy them online they Amazon, best of luck locating one which I have no doubt that you will, good hunting.
@Gregg Oelker If you're an Iowa resident, you receive free admission.
Any age
Parking is not free, and not expensive.
Great tour! Worth the time. You don't need the guided tour, you can chat with the vet volunteers on the way. Half day or much less depending how much you chat with the volunteers. Thanks for helping with the fires and be safe.
Yes, absolutely. Note that the Labor Day weekend coincides with LA Fleet Week so it will be very busy. Check the Iowa's website and the LA Fleet Week website for more info.
Yes, they had a scavenger hunt for the kids, kept my granddaughter busy up until the end, then she got a sticker an dog tag,
If you're in the parking lot facing the ship there's a couple Park style tables to the right, bear easy not to notice if you're not looking for them.
We're open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
If the dog is a service dog then it is more than welcome to come onboard.
Being that you know that protocol, I think it would be perceived as welcome respect for their service. Lots of veterans volunteer to speak to and engage with the public.
Yes i cant remember what the discount was but they do
It's $ 29 for adults and $ 22 for children. They have military and retirement discounts. the hours are 10 to 5 daily
You can purchase them at the site but I think there is a slight discount if you purchase them online. I bought mine online on my way to the harbor.
You can walk around the bridge but not able to go in the conning tower.
No
No
You can get a wheel chair up on the main deck only. Other levels are only accessible by very steep ladders
Don't take a pet. There are ladders you will need both hands. It is a war ship! Never built to become a museum and have civilians aboard.
Just like they've already said no lockers but the parking is right there real close so you can leave stuff in your car and go back to it if need be. Also if you're going on a cruise trip on one of the ships you can present that boarding ticket and get a discount for the USS Iowa. Hope this helps and enjoy.
Not that I know of, it has a gate.
Yes. 10a 5p.
Hi Evelyn, the ship actually does have wheelchair lift access to three decks not previously accessible via wheelchair, including the new Lost at Sea exhibit!
Turret 2 is strictly off tour and not accessible. Turret 3 has had the main deck hatch opened and a plexiglass cover installed for limited viewing. For the immediate foreseeable future, there will be no access to Turrets 1 or 3, beyond this viewing window. Turret 2 will remain permanently unaccessible due to the nature of the Turret's history, and respect for the families of the 47 sailors lost.
Ships have a 2 or 3 letter prefix to the hull number specifying the ship's major and minor (sub)class. The first B tells you that the ship is a battleship. Since battleships do not have a subclass the first letter is repeated. Destroyers were DD, destroyer escorts were DE, Heavy (Armoured) Cruiser are CA, Light Cruisers are CL, etc.
I took about 2 hours on my self guided tour. Also there are many vets on board to answer any questions.
You should probably contact the ship directly...
When you come aboard let them know that you're a former crew member and ask if it's possible to see your berthing area. If they have an extra tour guide or security volunteer available to escort you they probably will. We're always glad to welcome Iowa crew members and try to accommodate them. You can contact me directly and i can give you more info.
No. Only by means of a center tour center to pay 20. 25. Dollar for this 40 50 dollar
Yes. Hit by a two shells during battles in the Marshall islands during WWII (dents still are there). The big damage on the Iowa was when a shell exploded in turret 2 during a training exercise in 1989, killing 47. Lots of info on the ship about this.
While the Iowa class ships served the Navy quite well, in the end, they were very labor intensive, and thus expensive to maintain. Most functions that are automated in modern vessels, required large numbers of sailors to complete manually. When they were decommissioned for the final time, they were held in inactive reserve (mothball fleet) for years, with hope of reuse in the future. The expenditure to activate/update them again would have been to great, thus leading to ships being struck from the Naval Register, and transferred for use as museum ships.
Yes
Yes there is a discount for Vets and yes they do have WW2 Vets but not always from Iowa.
There are. The ppl that give the presintations and the guides are all Vetrans. And they so insightful and friendly. They enjoyed answering all our questions. ( machinery excites me)

Last entrance is 4 PM. Ship closes at 5. You can purchase tickets online or in person.
Gourmet hot dogs, salad, fries. Very good taste and price
Yes, they are very nice I'm sure they can help you
The Wikipedia article is a great resource for answers to this question. She was decommissioned in 1990, and opened as a Museum in 2012.
Yes, there is a gift shop at the end of the tour. It has hats, shirts, posters, shot glasses, beer mugs and everything else you expect from a tourist gift shop.
