We travel the country in our RV in hopes of seeing most of the beautiful USA. First thing we do is stop in the local visitor center for ideas. Their helpfulness varies in terms of the employees and what they offer; many times the employees do not know very much about the area! This was once of the nicest visitor centers we've seen. The gentleman at the help desk spent a lot of time with us and really tailored his suggestions (and his notes on the map) to our own interests. We were impressed with how well he knew the city. Austin is a great place to visit - and the Visitor Center makes it even better.

Every time we visit Austin we must stop at the visitor center. They have the coolest souvenirs. The staff are nice and very helpful. Escape room is right next to it. I always get excited to see my dear friend on the window decal:)) Best streets to walk are the 6th, you'll find all kinds of curious stores and good places to eat. Also 1st street, you'll see lots of murals, art, places to eat, shop and taco trucks.

We did the "Hill country/wine/BBQ" tour with Evan as the tour guide. It was a wonderful tour and our guide was fun, energetic and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend. The visitors center also had a great selection of souvenirs.

The staff was wonderful. They showed my nephew how to use the Austin city map. The gift shop has some really nice things there too.

We parked on a Sunday and it was free. The meter parking during the weekdays was much cheaper than downtown

I'm not sure a general classification of all Segway and duck tour operators as scammers is necessarily true, however this location is a proper tourist information center, and they book tours through thier own payment provider so I assume you would be covered. Although I can't see them selling fake tours as they seem to know what they are doing and the tours they book usually start in the building anyway.
One option is to park at one of the cities transit stations. You can ask the bus driver be for paying for your day ticket what busses to take. A day pass is only a few dollars. It's available for 24 hours. You pay on the bus and it will print the ticket for you immediately. All buses have maps available you can pickup. I usually just ask a driver. The buses run untill night time around when things start closing up for the night. In austin mostly everything closes at night. Except 7 11, 24 dinner, kerby lane dinner, tysons tacos. The Walgreens on river side is 24 hours and is fairly close to the center.
Check with the Visitor's Center.
