First off all, they don’t allow you to meet any dog without filling out an adoption application first. Second, they told me I couldn’t adopt nor see the dog because one of my cats rabies shot had just expired. I just got out of the military and just moved to Gainesville so I didn’t know it had expired. They sat there and told me how they won’t even allow you to foster before you adopt because they have no space in the shelter if the dog happens to come back but I was welcome to adopt and return the dog if it doesn’t work out. It became clear to me that they are not trying to find their animals forever homes.

front desk staff was incredibly rude and didn't care to help me with adoption. Cared more about what time it was and when they were going to be able to leave. Do not recommend.

We were traveling from Nevada and found a very well mannered abandoned or lost pup in Alachua, Florida. Glad they could take him in and find his family or place him with one. Super kind staff.

You can get them fixed free of charge from Operation Catnip. Rather than give them away to someone that may be irresponsible and let the kitten get pregnant. They even provide the traps. Try it please.. Just noticed, this is 2 years old post.
Well, it may not be open on Sundays however, it is open on Saturdays from 10am-5:30pm when most people are out & about running errands, dining or shopping anyway. Sunday's for church and rest/relaxation. We can't always have what we want but that's why there's emergency animal hospitals to accommodate us. It's kinda like our doctor offices are open M-F and if something occurs we call the on-call doctor by calling MD office that will direct us to go to the nearest ER, Urgent Care Center or Hospital depending on the seriousness/nature of the call.
Well when I had a problem with strays I went and bought a trap caught about 20 cats let them go into a dog cage. About 3 to 5 at a time called animal control every day to come and get them. The kittens I took in and got them shots and domesticated them got them adopted out by going to pets mart every weekend. If u care about animals u do what u can to help sadly the ferals can’t be helped. They spread disease that can be deadly to other cats. That’s why when I see a feral with kittens I try to get them away from the mother so ultimately they will get adopted to a forever home.
Maybe she didn't have a choice about being away and not being able to take her dog. Maybe she left her dog with family that didn't do a good job taking care of him. Think of being in the hospital long term or being in jail. Jail is most likely since they put people in jail on just an accusation and then you have to prove yourself innocent. If you're not aware, our "justice" system is seriously broken and this girl is still trying to track down her pet. Good luck hun.
I would call them and ask. Worst they can do is say no.
They have the adoptable animals on their website with ages listed but the ages seem to be mostly estimates
If the kittens are old enough, 8 weeks or older, then you can bring them into the Humane Society, and you'll just fill out a paper and they'll take them from you.

They have all sorts. We adopted a beautiful hound mix as cute and sweet as ever

County Animal Services is for animals before adoption. For your pet check's surgery with this group-- https://www.humanesocietyncfl.org
Director Ed Williams told me the adoption rate was above 90 percent after refusing to return my stolen chipped dog. Said they do uthinize some dogs but most find homes.... So they can steal your animal back then charge you unaffordable fines in excess of hundreds of dollars. Or give your dog to someone with enough money to afford fines. This place is paid for through scamming good loving pet owners. The sooner its shut down the safer pets will be.
You will regret chipping your dog. I promiss. Hope you have a deep wallet..
Animal services does not have a breed specific registration, to see what types is there, you can go to www.petharbor.com put in any Gainesville area zip code to get to Alachua County Animal Services you can look at all the animals in shelter in different ways, by asking for breed specific types or to see all animals say lost animal without specific breed type will get you to every animal that is updated hourly on the system to what type is at the shelter. Hope this helps. Petharbor does notify you.
Adoption event taking place at Alachua County Animal Services June 8,9,10 WILL BE FREE. CHECK FACEBOOK page for more information.
No, the shelter is closed to public Sunday and Monday. Strays, if person can't hold until Tuesday can be turned in to the Blue Pearl AVS on West University Ave to hold for ACAS pick up.
There are times that the Alachua County Animal Services offers free adoptions. Check with shelter staff, and you might also want to register a breed preference so you will be notified when a small dog is available for adoption. Hope you find one to adopt soon!
In addition, there is not enough staff to handle customers if they were to be open 7 days a week.
