Great park, I just wish the trail system was better. Having to pick between the north and south areas was tough, because I didn't want to hike the 1.5 mile segment of trail out and back between the two, not to mention the loop would have been 17 miles total. I opted to explore the mine area, and I did about a 4.5 mile loop down there. You can tell the Vermilion side of the park was established in 2014, when I drove over there everything looked brand new.

My husband and I took the underground tour about 9 years ago and we were very excited to take our daughter back for her to experience it, but then we found out that the underground tour is not available until 2023 due to maintenance, but they offered a ground tour instead for $5 per person. We were a little disappointed, but decided to do the ground tour since we were already there and my husband and I didn't see the grounds while we there last time. Our tour guide was Reed and he was AMAZING! Honestly, best tour guide that we ever had on any tour and he deserves a raise! He is amazing at his job and made the tour enjoyable, but we also learned so much! He was great with kids. We had 5 kids in our group and he was very patient and included the kids within the tour! I highly recommend going and doing the ground tour until the underground tour is available and ask to have to Reed as your guide!

I haven't gone since I was a young kid. The miner guide then, kinda scared us. Took my son and hubby thats never been today. We had Mr. Blah. And he was so informative and so patient w not only my kid, but all the others. Even showed us the bats while waiting for our ride back up. I learned more in my short time with him, than many visits to other mines! He really helped paint the picture of how life was for these miners! Most definitely recommend!

Fun park for all ages. Camping nearby and plenty to do and see. The mine tour is a MUST! Make sure to make reservations though. Our guide was Karel (Carl) and he was great. Pros: - Mine tour is a 10/10 tour and a must - Several bike trails (paved or off-road) - Nice/quiet campground up the road - Nearby towns (Soudan and Tower, or Ely further out) for supplies or dinner Cons: -Not as much hiking as some parks I would recommend this state park to anyone!

Peter Miler | Jul 17, 2018

Park is open 8am to 10 PM. Mine tours 10am to 4pm. Tour is about 90 minutes long. Open daily memorial day through end of September.

Is there a place for children to "mine"? Look for iron, copper, gold and diamonds? Minecraft, lol

Not exactly, they will still love the minecart ride, though. If you take the stairs down to the old train tracks under the dumper arm, there's some chunks of iron that they can find.

Do you have to schedule a tour or is there set times the tour happens on?

You can reserve online. They run 10am to 4pm. You can just show up and book it once you get there. You may need to wait though. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/lake_vermilion_soudan/tours.html

is there parking for trailers?

The parking lot is pretty decent sized so I would say yes to trailers.

how much time should you allow to visit mine and park. hike some. What else is there to do there or in the surrounding area.

I'd at least give it a few hours. There's museums on site that'll tell more about the place as well. There's lakes you can kayak in and presumably fishing.
