What a wonderful way to see a part of history generations later. I've done this tour a couple of times throughout my years but wanted to share this experience with my son, so here was trip #3 and even though I've been before, I continued to learn so much more. Our tour guide was absolutely a treat, he had so many more details, facts and yet kept it interesting and funny with some really cute jokes. I believe he stated that he once was a miner himself. My 8 year old loves collecting rocks and this just blew him away as well as the extensive amount of rocks, crystals, minerals that are available at the gift shop. You get to wear a vest, a hard hat and a miners light while riding in on a little train like vehicle which is for safety but also really fun for kids to dress up and ride on.

Very fun, worth the low cost entry fee. The tour was into the mountain on a train you straddle. Be prepared to be in very close proximity to strangers for about an hour. We wore N95 masks but it seemed optional and only one other couple had theirs. If you can get over that the tour was awesome. The guide was a miner at that mill so it was like stories from grandpa. He kept it clean and g rated, but entertaining. We will never forget our trip and will recommend to others. Just protect yourself and mask up. It's owned by the city and entry was 14 pp. Totally worth that.

Really cool tour- my 2 boys (ages 6 and 11)really loved it. Very kid friendly (as long as they’re respectful). It was fun and really interesting. The rock gift shop was amazing and very reasonably priced

We had a great time during the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable (actually worked in the mine) and friendly as is everyone there. The mine tour itself is awesome as you get to 1500 feet under the mountain and you even get to get off of the mine train to view a couple of sections of the mine. They have a great gift shop as well.

Well it depends how dependant the person is on the walker.
Its chilly. They use fans to bring fresh air into the mine from outside. It's still warmer than outside air in the winter plus no wind.
They suggest that you make reservations, but will take your group if they have room.
I am sure you can but I wouldn't recommend it for someone under 4 or 5 but there is other tours you can take
There is one spot we 36 stairs steps. They are even and an easy climb and there was no rush at all. Most of the tour is very easy access. You ride down the shaft straddling a train car. Even with my bum knee i was able to climb on the car and up the steps.
I was there in January 2018 and noticed signs stating service dogs can not go into the mine. Folks put on hardhats, etc, then straddle an actual mine tram, sitting on narrow plank with no wiggle room at all. The mine passages are very narrow, the ground is uneven, and some places have a lot of stairs. A service dog could not be safely accommodated. Depending on the disability of the handler, the mine tour may not be a good choice. EDIT: Despite an uninformed answer to the contrary, there is absolutely a sign stating no service dogs. It is NOT illegal. The law reads: "If a business can show that allowing a service dog to enter a specific part of their business would constitute a direct threat, fundamental alteration, or undue burden, then they may legally exclude service dogs from entering there, but must still accommodate the person with a disability without their service dog." The mine tour operators very wisely, and LEGALLY prohibit service dogs for the safety of all.
They are open, but I believe you need to make a reservation to go into the mine.
