Wonderful hike! Can't beat the views from the top. And you can stay there if you get up early enough!

An incredibly humbling experience. The hike was beautiful the entire way. Be sure to bring lots of snacks! There are plenty waterfalls and streams along the way, so we refilled our water bottles using that and purification tablets. It gets a bit cold up there-we went in September and there was still snow in places. The service road on the way to the trailhead is ROUGH, but manageable in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. A few smaller cars got stuck on one of the switchbacks because of a deep mud area. No cell service (Verizon).

This is by far one of my favorite PNW hikes. You get to experience hiking in a wooded area, open flower filled fields and then a rocky scramble at the end. The hike is challenging, but definitely doable. Beware of the 5 mile road that leads to the trailhead. It is pothole ridden, and quite narrow.

terrible road, wonderfully gorgeous trail. beware of the road.... my jetta did okay, but other larger vehicles appeared to get stuck. the road is very narrow and steep and busy on popular weekends...

Questions & Answers

I know the lookout itself is first come first served, but how does that work? Does someone have to sit there all day letting people know it's taken for the evening, or can you write and leave a note that it has been claimed for that night?

Last time I came there (no overnight), there were plenty of people to spend the night there, in a kind of mattress and all over the place, but depends on the season I guess. If you plan to sleep there I recommend not to arrive too late and of course take your mat and stuff

Can we bring our Dog? We need it to be dog friendly.

You can, it is quite vigorous though and when you get to the top you enter north cascades national park where dogs are not permitted. Additionally when I went with my dog it was over crowded, lots of city people, I can't tell you how many people had comments about our dog because he appears small that think it was cruelty to animals etc so effin annoying trust me :(. Try to go on an off day.

Is there water available on this trail in September/October?

There is in the first couple of miles, but do not rely on it as your only water source 😊
