How do you get a campsite without a reservation, do you wait in line or do they know the information at the entrance booth?

On a first come basic

Only half of the sites can be reserved at the most popular campgrounds. The others are on a first come basis, but usually fill before 11:00 AM in peak season. They post last year's fill times on the website.
