I would be guessing too, but would have to agree that there is probably no host there now. However, if I were travelling in that area, I might try to see if the campsites are accessible. I don't remember there being a gate. There is BLM land at lower elevation west of I25, N & S of Socorro.
It's open year round 365 days. During the off season there is no host and the small "welcome" building is closed. The camp spots and trails are always open and cost $5 a day via self pay box/slot. I DON'T KNOW IF A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN WILL CLOSE IT 🙁
I was there this weekend (4/5 - 4/7/2019) and it was open. They are still working on the water system and it is not yet operational. We did see Carlos, the campground host. He is living off-site until the water system repairs have been completed. He did not have a completion date he could share with us. Still - If you visit you will find it very quiet and enjoyable!! You will need to bring water; the store in Datil has gallon jugs of water. The hike is great!
I just spent 4 days there It does not close like tge other said ..only no host in off season Right now only toilets and camp sites Theyre putting in water and electric right now Were working on it every day i was there 5$ per day now without water and elec Beautiful...Quiet Worth the drive Jct 12. And Jct 60 Breatg taking drives
I am guessing that it is closed for the season. It is at high elevation in a remote area. When we were there in September, there was a host. The conditions would be too harsh for a host at this time of year.
We stayed here at the end of September. Could be closed for the season?
