If you know a date you want to go it is wise to make reservations. Popular dates, as Sarah said, will fill fast. When capacity is reached, only those with reservations will be allowed in.
They are not required but they are reccomended because they fill up fast on summer weekends!
I don't believe they're required but it's definitely a good idea. The spots fill up fast.
