It's illegal to force someone to give up their service animal if they have officially been certified.

Under ADA the only federally recognized animals are dogs and mini horses. So what youre talking about is more than likely an ESA (Emotional Support Animal). FHA however covers Service Dogs and ESAs, so long as you prove a doctor's note from a mental health specialist stating you greatly benefit from having the animal with you. However, there are a few specific laws that would allow your landlord to turn you away. Check further into it. Just know that under Federal Law, there is no official registry, certification, etc for SDs, ESA, or Therapy Dogs.

If you live in Travis County or the city of Austin you can schedule an appointment to surrender an animal. It usually takes a week or more to get an appointment scheduled because they want to collect information about the animal's behavior and previous home experience.
