He was governor of NC during the civil war, later congressman, then once again governor post civil war. He was on the Confederate side but represented a somewhat more moderate view and worked to reunite the North and South after the war. Politician through and through. The house and historical provide an interesting glimpse into the darker moments of our history as a nation. Places like this should be preserved so that we know where we came from as a nation and so that do not repeat the mistakes of our past.
